TOIL de France.....
The Penultimate climb of alpe d'huez.....GULP!
This challenge will commence on the 28th June 2012 for 5 days and will
bring some new challenges. The first is I have to raise at least £1450.00 to participate so the pressure is on as I have set a personal target of £2000.00 to raise for this challenge. I hope to do this by taking part in a number of events such as a half marathon, full marathon and a couple of long distance AUDAX bike rides. The plan is to get pedalling in the local community in some shopping centres to publicise the challenge and hopefully raise some pennies along the way! I also hope to organise a few social events so please follow my blog / facebook page to see what’s happening near you! I look forwards to seeing you and hope that you can support me and The Myton Hospices in this years very worthwhile fundraising challenge....the more money we can raise, the more nurses Myton can employ and the more care Myton are able to offer :o)
The TOIL de France……
This short but extremely demanding 5-day cycle challenge takes us through the heart of the French Alps, tackling the toughest mountain climbs made famous by the Tour de France. Spectacular views of mountain peaks, alpine valleys and hanging glaciers make the long twisting climbs worthwhile! Our challenge ends with two of the toughest and most renowned ascents in the region: the demanding Col du Galibier and the steep hair-pin bends of Alpe D’Huez. Conquering these mountains will earn you a life-long sense of achievement and give you something in common with the most elite cyclists in the past 100 years!
Perhaps I should have read the following statement more carefully before clicking “REGISTER”…. EEEEEEEK!
Please note: This is an exceptionally strenuous challenge and you will need to train extremely hard to succeed.
The cycling is very challenging, and it is vital that you don’t underestimate how tough this challenge is. Each day includes two mountain climbs; they vary in difficulty but each still presents a challenge. This terrain is not suitable for anyone who has not trained hard and is not used to cycling. Distances are fairly long considering the terrain, averaging 100km (60 miles) per day. We will have 6 mountain passes to climb in total, 1 x 2nd category climb, 2 x 1st category climbs and 3 x HC (Beyond category) climbs!!!

Category Climbs explained...
The 6 climbs with category and gradients!
Mountain climbs are categorised in the world of professional cycling, based on length and gradient. They range from 4th Category (least challenging) to 1st Category and then Hors Catégorie (‘beyond categorization’ –incredibly tough!) Tour legend says these were based on the gears a car would have to use to get up the mountain; they were not expected to be able to get up a Hors Catégorie climb!
Cars have obviously changed since the earliest climbs were classified, as have the standards of road surfaces. Categorisation can vary but we have listed that most commonly listed in modern Tour history.
